Between September 2020 and April 2024, European food safety authorities detected contamination in a range of Indian products. 

The majority of these were nuts and sesame seeds (313), followed by herbs and spices (60), dietetic foods (48), and other food items (34). 

Shockingly, 87 consignments were rejected at the border, while many others were later pulled from the market shelves.

Ethylene oxide, a colorless gas primarily used as a pesticide, was originally designed for sterilizing medical equipment.

Despite these dangers, no proactive measures have been taken by European officials to ban the use of ethylene oxide in Indian products.

Besides direct exposure, this chemical can produce other harmful substances like ethylene glycol, which has previously caused deaths due to its presence in cough syrups😣. 

Joseph stressed the urgent need for safer alternatives and urged government bodies to explore options like gamma ray treatment.😰

While chemical treatment is a cost-effective way to extend product shelf life, its risks outweigh the benefits. 

Unfortunately, many countries do not test for ethylene oxide, limiting our understanding of its prevalence. 

The EU has set a strict 0.1 mg/kg limit for this chemical, prompting calls for better testing and alternative sterilization methods.
