Underlining the increasing demand for organic farming, the government has actively promoted chemical-free agriculture through schemes like Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for Northeastern Region (MOVCDNER). 

These initiatives aim to foster organic practices, supporting Ladakh's transition towards becoming a certified organic UT.


Local Enthusiasm and Traditional Practices :

Locals in Ladakh are not just driven by the prospect of financial gains but also by a commitment to preserving the region's age-old agricultural traditions. 

With negligible chemical use and challenging terrains limiting cultivable land, Ladakh is naturally positioned for organic certification.


Governmental Measures : 

The local government has taken proactive steps, including the promotion of vermicompost, mulching, neem-oil, and implementing policies to encourage organic farming. 

The Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) is a pivotal step towards Ladakh's goal of becoming the first organic UT by 2025.


Infrastructure and Connectivity Challenges : 

While Ladakh embarks on this organic journey, challenges such as yield drops and the transition away from chemical dependency must be addressed. 

A stable market with efficient connectivity is essential to ensure timely and affordable transportation of organic products, making them accessible to consumers.

Governor Ganga Prasad inaugurated two Organic Farmer Facilitation Centers in Leh and Kargil, reflecting collaborative efforts between Ladakh and Sikkim, India's first organic state. 

Sikkim has pledged support, showcasing a united front in the pursuit of organic agriculture.


Addressing Yield Concerns : 

The primary challenge lies in the initial drop in yields, particularly impacting farmers reliant on chemicals. 

Finding effective alternatives to combat insect-pests, diseases, and weeds is crucial for a successful transition to organic farming.

Continued advancements in organic farming techniques, supported by government policies and incentives, are vital for Ladakh's organic agricultural expansion.
